You Give Them Something to Eat

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

This is a popular story.  It’s one of the few miracles that are recorded in all four gospel accounts, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.  And as we look at Mark’s unique account of this miracle, we find that he has an emphasis on the twelve disciples.  Mark is bringing us into the spiritual journey of the twelve, helping us to see how they are, and are not, figuring out who Jesus is.  We’ll see that Jesus is also teaching them some important ministry lessons as well.  And so as we look at this miracle from the perspective of the disciples today, I’d like us to consider our own role in ministry.  How is God shaping us and our ministry through this passage?  And more importantly, how is he shaping our perspecitve of who Jesus is through this passage?

Like One of the Prophets

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Who is Jesus?  As we’ve looked at Mark, we’ve already said that this is one of the central questions that’s being asked.  We find in this passage, that people at that time were asking that question and coming up with various answers, all associated with the prophetic history of Israel.  As we look at their answers, especially in the context of Christ’s message of repentance, we’ll find that Christ came as the ultimate, final, prophet.

Passage: Mark 6:14-29

They Went Out and Preached that People Should Repent

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

This passage shows Jesus and his disciples on a revolution — they are out with a radical message and an urgent mission. As we look at this passage, we’ll learn more about that message and how Jesus and his disciples are getting that message out. We’ll see how people respond to this message in this passage. And as we look at Jesus and his disciples sharing this message, we’ll see that we too are both recipients of this message and those entrusted to carry this message forward to the world — we are all part of this revolution of hearts and souls!

Daughter, Your Faith Has Made You Well

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

Last week we looked at this same passage, but focused on the story of Jairus and his daughter.  This week we will focus on the woman with the flow of blood in verses 25-34.  We consider her faith as she came to Jesus.  And as we look at the faith of this woman with the flow of blood, I want us to think about our own faith as well.  Last week we talked about responding in faith amidst trials.  This week I want us to think about what that faith looks like.  Do we go to Jesus first, or somewhere else?  And do we go to Jesus in the ways that he tells us to, or with our own made up approach?  So let’s dig into this passage and we’ll flush out these questions as we consider this woman and her faith, and more importantly, as we consider Jesus’ ministry to her.
